Sunday Morning Bread Baking

Sunday morning is for baking breads. Sipping fresh-brewed coffee, or home made cappuccino, I pore over recipes to learn how to bake breads. Richard Bertinet’s “Dough: Simple Contemporary Bread”, King Arthur Flour’s online recipe treasure trove, or simply online recipes from Bon Appetit, Food Network, etc.

If you’ve been following my journey of separation, divorce, healing and rediscovery, I’ve mentioned that cooking and baking are integral to my healing and rediscovery process. It’s about the process. And learning how to bake is a process, and while the bread is a wonderful outcome of the process, for me it’s about what can I learn, what’s working and what’s not working. Most important, what can I discover and learn about myself – and there may be things that I was aware of subconsciously, but never brought to the surface, and therefore was never able to address.

Back to baking bread on Sunday morning. Over a couple of Sundays I learned how to bake Raisin Walnut bread, Ciabatta bread, Sourdough bread, and Focaccia bread. Learning how to create different flavors using 3 types of flour for the Raisin Walnut bread. How to make the Ciabatta bread both airy and chewy with virgin Olive oil. Figuring our that sour dough starter is a 5-day process that requires daily (and initially more than once per day) “feeding”. And finally, making a savory Focaccia where the cherry tomatoes and onions had to be prepared separately, then added, and the freshly-ground Reggiano Parmesan rounds out the flavor.

Happy to report that, by and large, the breads are delicious (always taste better when I know what’s in them), yet there are definitely lessons to be learned from the process to improve next time. Part of the healing accomplished was realizing that I enjoyed the process and the learning, that I could bake if, and when, I had the desire, and that the final product was actually comparable to what I could buy from a local bakery.
