I ran my first trail ultramarathon, the Yeti 100 mile Endurance Run, in Damascus, Virginia on September 25, 2020. The ultra stretches along the Virginia Creeper Trail between Whitetop Mountain and Abingdon, but this year the course was altered due to Covid19.
The race was both brutal and beautiful, starting at 5 am in a torrential downpour as we ran 14 miles up a 3% grade trail from Damascus to the Green Cove train station before pounding back downhill to complete the first loop of 28 miles. We then ran 4 loops from Damascus past the Alvarado train station to the turnaround across the Watauga Trestle, each 18 miles. It rained and poured for 12 hours!
